Michael R.D. Foot, the son of a soldier, was born in England in 1919. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford, and joined the British Army on the outbreak of the Second World War. A member of the Royal Artillery he fought in France during the later stages of the war and in 1945 was decorated for service with the French Resistance in Brittany.

After the war M.R.D. Foot lectured at Oxford University for eight years before becoming Professor of Modern History at Manchester University. He was made CBE in 2000.

 

He is the author of the following books: SOE in France (2004), Six Faces Of Courage (2003), SOE in the Low Countries (2001), SOE: The Special Operations Executive (1999), Art And War: 20th (1990)
